Folklore is a genre of popular culture, consisting of customs, legends, traditions, and popular festivals transmitted through imitation and orally from generation to generation.
The term folklore came to be used to refer to the traditions, customs, and superstitions of the popular classes. Later, the term came to designate all the culture born primarily in these classes, giving folklore the status of the unwritten history of a people.
As science and technology developed, all these traditions came to be considered fruits of popular ignorance. However, the study of folklore is fundamental in order to characterize the cultural formation of a people and their past, as well as to detect the current popular culture, since folklore is influenced by its time.
